Lacrosse is known as Canada's official summer sport. The game of Lacrosse has historical cultural roots in this country. The origin of the game Lacrosse started in North America among the various tribes and nations who played this game as a way of acknowledging the Creator's life forces and honoring the Elders. This game would often be played with hundreds of people and would go on for many days. Many tribes used the game of Lacrosse to settle issues and differences between tribes.

Today, Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in Canada. ASCNWT will introduce the game of Lacrosse to all 33 communities in the Northwest Territories. To support and help each community grow their own Lacrosse program, ASCNWT will provide trained Lacrosse instructors to teach the basics of Lacrosse and provide all the equipment. Each community will be given player sticks, goalie sticks, balls and Lacrosse manuals in the hopes that the schools and recreation departments will continue to practice the sport of Lacrosse.

Established in 1999, ASCNWT was created through a national consensus-building process in response to the need for more accessible and equitable sport and recreation opportunities for Aboriginal peoples across the Northwest Territories.

We believe that all Aboriginal people in the NWT should have the opportunity to participate in sport and recreational activities at a level of involvement they find meaningful and valuable.
