Strategic Plan 2020-2025

April 1st, 2019 marked The Aboriginal Sports Circle of the Northwest Territories (ASCNWT) 20-year anniversary. Over the past year, in anticipation of our anniversary, ASCNWT has been developing a new strategic plan. By engaging with community members and stakeholders we learnt how to better benefit sport and recreation leaders, Territorial Sport Organizations (TSO), Volunteers, Indigenous Coaches and Athletes within the NWT. Through this process ASCNWT created a new mission and vision that will help guide us to better serve communities and Indigenous people.

Vision

The Aboriginal Sports Circle NWT envisions a future of healthy, active and culturally connected Indigenous communities.

Mission

The Aboriginal Sports Circle NWT empowers and builds capacity within NWT communities, promotes and supports culturally relevant programming, and develops athletes and coaches in a level of involvement they find meaningful. Moving forward, ASCNWT will be focusing on developing programs based on community interest, strengths and desires. We will strive to help communities build capacity in activities that they find beneficial.

ASCNWT will achieve this by:

  • Continuing to organize and develop Northern and Dene Games NT and Archery NT.

  • Create partnerships with all TSOs and helping them get into the communities to better develop all levels of sport.

  • Provide support to Indigenous coaches and athletes to compete at all levels

  • Work with recreation leaders and volunteers to get a better sense of what support is needed in their communities.

Over the past 20 years, ASCNWT has stepped foot in all 33 communities delivering grassroots programing with schools, recreation professionals and volunteers. Although we are shifting our focus from some of the traditional sports that we typically offer, we will continue to build these relationships and help develop sport and recreation in communities and aim to be the bridge between communities and TSO’s. We will continue to provide sporting opportunities for the NWT with events such as the Traditional Games Championships (TGC), North American Indigenous Games and NWT Archery Championships. We will also provide more leadership development opportunities by offering an Indigenous Coach Development Program and workshops such as the Aboriginal Coaching Module and Active Indigenous Communities.
